Ayan is visual feast to movie lovers and hard-core Surya fans (0f course to Tamanna fans). Surya handled Deva character very well. He is now well-established actor or artist.
Ayan is a story revolving around a character called Deva. Deva is a smuggler who works with Prabhu. Kamalesh is rival to Prabhu. Deva is so efficient that Prabhu is number one in smuggling market. Kamalesh wants to take number one position by doing all possible bad things against both of them. First half of the movie shows strengths of Deva, Prabhu and Kamalesh characters. Second half is about how Deva cracks smuggling tricks and destroys Kamalesh. At the end of the movie, Deva gets a job in Customs Department. Climax idea is borrowed from "Catch Me If You Can", where hero finally designs MICR number that is so unique that it is very difficult to forge by anybody.
Surya is apt for Deva character. I feel that he is next Kamal Hasan of Kollywood. All his disguise getups are awesome. I liked the one where he shows diamonds in his wig. His comedy timing and body language are perfect. Overall he steals the show. Tamanna plays usual character just for songs and couple of comedy and emotional scenes. Tamanna's brother character plays critical role. His dying scene is row.
Harris Jayaraj's mucis is big big asset. He capture audience attention at the beginning song (Hey raja song). Other songs are equally excellent. Background score is very good. Camera work is the biggest asset to Ayan. Every scene is rich in colors. I liked picturization of "Nenje Nenje" song. In that song, you can see sand dumes, sea shore and blue sky all in one screen. K V Anand is a great director. He mixed commercial elements - action, romance, comedy etc - in correct proportion. Dialogues are rendered like "Sujatha" style (Sujatha used to write dialogues for Shankar/Maniratnam movies. Unfortunately, he is no more). Sun Pictures' publicity for Ayan was simply superb. They pushed Ayan name into everybody's mind in all possible ways.
Overall, Ayan is pisa-vasool movie. You can watch once. I am awaiting original DVD.
